Bennett & Williams water supply experience is broad in both geography and scope. Members of the firm have worked on five (5) continents and have designed water systems throughout the United States. Our experience includes water supply planning and engineering in a wide variety of settings from desert supplies with 1,500 foot deep recharge wells to mountainous terrains with fractured rock. Our experience with infiltration galleries and in-stream surface water intakes spans most of the physiographic settings in the United States. Bennett & Williams' unique experience with the design and development of Collector Wells (including Ranney®) throughout the world is unparalleled.

In-stream Intakes for Cooling WaterIn-stream intakes are experiencing a rise in popularity as a feasible alternative for providing a cost-effective and environmentally desirable raw water supply. The relatively recent increased demand for large water supplies associated with siting several hundred 'peak' power plants in the United States has driven many power purveyors to less than desirable physiographic sites to develop a consistent supply of five (5) to eight (8) MGD for plant cooling water. In-stream fixed-screen intakes as shown have many advantages over traditional intakes and traveling screen systems for providing a raw cooling water from a surface water body. When properly designed and installed in-stream fixed-screen intakes can provide lower operating cost, maximum dependability and security, ease and convenience of operation and they are environmentally sound vs. traditional intakes.
Infiltration Galleries For Cooling Water Where ground water and surface water sources are not feasible due to quality and quantity limitations, Bennett & Williams has designed infiltration galleries for new power plants. Some of our infiltration galleries have required riverbed shaping and river hydraulic evaluations as part of the infiltration unit design. This specialized engineering has allowed power companies to consider more difficult water supply sources for siting new facilities. | ||||||||||||||||||||

Engineering 'Outside'

Bennett & Williams provides the engineering, geotechnical evaluation and construction supervision necessary to assure the success of the project 'outside' the fence of the new power facility. Many of the new gas turbine driven generation plants are costing $500 million to $1 billion dollars to put on-line. Second only to fuel for the plant, plentiful water for cooling the gas turbine engines is the critical resource for these plants to operate. Often several sites are initially screened for environmental suitability before the selection of the final site. Environmental sensitivity and availability of quality water are becoming the key considerations in the siting process. Because so many of the 'good' power plant sites have recently been developed throughout the United States, many of the remaining sites are more geologically and geophysically challenging to develop. Bennett & Williams is experienced in providing the technical solutions for these challenging sites. Our water supply specialists and engineers can assist you in determining the feasibility of prospective sites that have suitable hydrologic, hydrogeologic, geologic and geophysical characteristics for water supply production. Bennett & Williams' professionals can assess, design and implement the best water supply extraction method(s) for your water production and treatment projects. We can assist in all phases of environmental permitting, construction siting, design, and construction oversight. Put our experience to work for you in the design and development of all available water supply extraction methods including of Radial Collector Wells, In-stream (Fixed-Screen) Intakes, Infiltration Galleries and Vertical Production Wells.
