Emergency Response and Remediation
Project Overview
In October, 2011, Bennett & Williams, Inc. was contacted by Tonda Enterprises (Richmond, Virgina) to assess an emergency response situation. One of the company's vehicles had experienced a fire, and in the process of extinguishing the flames, potentially hazardous materials were released to the environment. Further complicating the situation, a shallow, bored drinking water well was 30 feet away from the site of the fire. Materials included hundreds of petroleum based products, including brake fluid, transmission fluid, and gear oils. With the initial emergency response under control, measures needed to be taken to secure the site to prevent the spread of contaminantion, determine degree and extent of the release, characterize the products released and impacted soils, and determine remediation options.
Bennett & Williams, Inc. coordinated all site investigation and remediation actions at the site. These included: regulatory compliance, materials and soils hazardous determinations/characterizations, soil sampling and field screening of soils during excavation, backfill and site restoration, removal and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials, evaluation of soil and groundwater data, and response reporting. We kept the client apprised of site activities on a daily basis, and interface with regulators, insurance company representatives, and the homeowner to bring the project to a successful conclusion within 45 days of the incident.
